A New Source of Energy Using Low-Energy Fusion of Hydrogen

A new paper from Ed Storms, Research Scientist, with LENRGY, LLC, a Santa Fe, New Mexico company, has been published in Environmental Science: An Indian Journal.

Abstract:  This paper describes the claim for energy production based on the so-called cold fusion effect. Reasons are given to explore this energy source based on the need for such clean energy and the observed behavior. Chemical energy alone has powered civilization until relatively recently when nuclear fission power based on uranium became available. Efforts are now underway to go the next step on this path using nuclear sources by harnessing the fusion of hydrogen. The first attempt using the so-called hot fusion method has not been successful in producing practical power. Furthermore, the required generator is expected to be impractical as results of its complexity and size even after the many engineering problems are solved. Perhaps a different approach is needed. Fortunately, a new method to cause fusion using a simpler method was recently discovered; only to be widely rejected because it conflicts with what is known about nuclear interaction. This paper addresses this issue by summarizing some of the evidence supporting such a novel fusion reaction.

Final Penon Report on E-Cat Output Published

The Rossi v. Industrial Heat, et al. case in federal court in Florida has resulted in the release of numerous exhibits. In fact, over the past week there has been almost too much to speculate on as both sides can be inferred as making compelling arguments for and against their claims. This is very typical of the U.S. adversarial judicial system where the truth unfortunately matters less than mounting a vigorous legal attack and defense.

Among the documents is the final report of one Fabio Penon, who was the mostly absentee professional chosen as the Expert Responsible for Validation (ERV) by both sides. The report claims the “energy multiple was always higher than 6” and the temperature of the steam produced was in excess of 100 degrees for the 350 days. In fact, on most days the reported COP was in excess of 60, which is a shocking number for many reasons.

Clean Disruption

In the below video, Tony Seba makes the persuasive case that traditional energy and transportation will be obsolete in the next 15 years. In fact, a recent article makes the case progress is happening much faster than Mr. Seba’s presentation from March of 2016. Advances in solar energy, battery storage and possibly LENR are set to disrupt the status quo.

Indeed, Eos Energy Storage, the maker of zinc air battery technology, has recently announced a partnership with Siemens for performance guarantees supporting up to 20 years of continuous operation. Eos is claiming costs of $160 per usable kWh (at 40 MWh volume purchases). This is already at costs well below the scale cost projections for lithium ion batteries and EOS batteries come with the benefit of zinc being benign and not combustible.

The Hydrino

We’ve post a few articles on Randell Mills and Brilliant Light Power, formerly Black Light Power and the hydrino theory.  If their reported progress is real, Mills and BLP may indeed be the most promising alternative energy to watch.

LENR may be tangental to Mills’ research or perhaps the LENR effect is being confused with the waste heat produced by Mills’ hydrino formation theory.  The basic theory is that through a chemical reaction, a hydrogen atom can be altered to a different state where the electron drops into a lower energy state and the resulting excess binding energy is released as light and x-rays which can be harvested through photovoltaic cells.

Bill Gates on Opportunities in Energy

Speaking at Columbia University, Bill Gates told the crowd that if he were to drop out of school today, there were three promising fields he might choose: artificial intelligence, biotech and energy.

“Gates said there is a huge and growing demand for energy that’s “reliable, cheap, and clean.” And Gates said there is no system yet today that can provide enough energy that meets those criteria. That’s why he sees energy as an area of opportunity for innovative minds, he told the audience of mostly university students. “The innovations [in energy] will be profound,” said Gates. “And there are many paths to get to where we need to go.”

The full article is published here.  Gates is a quiet supporter of LENR technology and research at Texas Tech and has pledged to spend $30 billion developing alternative energy.  LENR may be one of the paths Gates expects will lead to our energy independence.

Who Is Watching Lenr?

There is a growing community of eyes watching the progression of LENR.  From former U.S. Vice-Presidents to the richest man on the world, the anomalies discovered by Martin Fleischmann and Stanley Pons over 25 years ago, are on the radar at the highest levels.

BlackRock Inc.  A 2012 investment report by the world’s largest asset manager, mentioned that they were following LENR and fusion start-ups.

Al Gore, former U.S. Vice President.  Mr. Gore references LENR and thorium in an online Google+ conversation in 2013.


Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft Corporation.  In 2014, Bill Gates visited the laboratories of ENEA in Frascati, Italy, where he was briefed on ENEA’s research activity, including in the field of LENR.

New Brillouin Energy Patent

We’ve written several articles on Brillouin Energy and its founder, Robert Godes.  Based in Berkley, California, this company continues to make great progress with very little fanfare. Robert Godes has the industry’s most credible LENR theory, Dr. McKubre of SRI has stated Brillouin is the closest organization to commercializing an LENR product, and Godes has engineered an ingenious nickel-based wet and dry boiler system that drives the underlying physics of LENR.

The Godes-Brillouin Theory is based on a controlled electron capture reaction.  Hydrogen is loaded into a nickel matrix where an electronic pulse (Q-pulse) is passed through the system, resulting in a compressed lattice within the constrained system.  Mass is created and a proton is converted to a neutron, causing a tremendous loss of energy in the system.  Godes describes this process as a “nuclear freezer.”  Protium is converted to deuterium, deuterium is converted to tritium and tritium is converted to quatrium, resulting in a net energy out as the quatrium rapidly beta decays and Helium-4 and heat is released into the system.

Key to the Brillouin system is the use of proprietary electronics and controls designed by Robert Godes, an inventive electrical engineer.  Interestingly, a patent was recently issued to Brillouin Energy Corporation and published on January 7, 2014 for a high-speed gate switching system.  Referred to as a Gate Hyperdrive system, it reportedly improves the efficiency of any conventional electronically controlled electric motor, inverter or other power conditioning equipment by about 25%.

Abstract
Techniques for overcoming many of the speed limitations of switching a gated device while protecting the device from damage provide a dynamic driving voltage to the gate of the device being switched. This dynamic voltage provides a way to overcome the complex impedances between the drive point and the actual gate allowing faster switching speeds. This dynamic driving voltage is provided by starting with a fixed amount of charge at a higher initial potential. The fixed charge and voltage are chosen so as not to exceed the device’s specified maximum gate current or the device’s maximum voltage between the gate and the source (punch-through voltage).

Brillouin expects to develop a system that can return 10 watts of thermal energy for every 1 watt of input electrical energy.  If successful, this technology could be tremendously disruptive in the fossil fuels energy industry.

 

E-Cat South Asia Tech Update

TOMORROWS ENERGY, TODAY

Since we last wrote, there continues to be important developments. The rest of the world is waking up that L.E.N.R. is serious. A recent Forbes article emphasized the maturing of the technology.

And OilPrice.com journalist Brian Westenhaus thinks the industry may have reached the turning point and perhaps the last stages before widespread acceptance. This is further supported by an influx of universities in the US and afield that are now including LENR or Cold Fusion studies in their syllabus.

The 18th International Conference on Cold Fusion (ICCF-18) held last month also provided substantial details of the technology along with deepening understanding of the physics behind it. In practice no-one is yet able to match the COP that Rossi has attained: COP=6, but we hope that all parties do succeed because there is much need for more efficient and environmentally friendly energy sources.

Our focus has continued to be on working with interested parties, discussing their needs and recommending solutions. The following diagram shows the wide applicability of the Rossi E-Cat and Hot-Cat.

Many companies around the globe and in this region are starting to focus on co- and tri- generation, the situation where one heat source is used over and over again. To this end the actual effective COP can be much higher than 6, if one can re-use the heat. A typical co-generation use could be using the initial heat for a food manufacturing process, and the waste heat for a chilling/refrigeration process.

Consider a typical Co-Generation opportunity: Fruit and Veges industry.

Primary Application: Blanching. For this, typically they would be using grid electricity, or Gas. With the E-Cat they would enjoy a COP of 6 (i.e. for every unit of energy previously used, now they can consume just 1/6th of that energy, reducing their bill proportionately). Once used the energy they have consumed is typically wasted.

Secondary Application: By coupling the blanching process and its waste heat, to a chiller system, the company can convert this waste heat into chilling, allowing operation of cold rooms for holding vegetables, at almost no additional energy cost. Assuming a 70% efficiency on this leg, the company might be able to get an additional 50% re-use of the energy (allowing for inefficiencies).

Now the company may also consider that there is a third use for the same energy – output from the Chiller is hot water (approximately 50-70 degrees C). This is ideal for general use in bathrooms and kitchens for washing and cleaning.

Notice from the example table above, that there is substantial improvement of the facility’s energy use. Using the E-Cat, the company may be able to achieve upwards of 10 times the value of the input energy. (note this is a generalized example. Engineers will be able to estimate specific applications which depend on environmental conditions and other factors).
